{"id":290,"date":"2015-12-16T08:00:32","date_gmt":"2015-12-16T08:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bethannesfinestallnatural.com\/?p=290"},"modified":"2015-12-16T14:43:20","modified_gmt":"2015-12-16T14:43:20","slug":"why-you-cant-flush-used-cat-litter-down-the-toilet-in-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bethannesfinestallnatural.com\/index.php\/why-you-cant-flush-used-cat-litter-down-the-toilet-in-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Why You Can&#8217;t Flush Used Cat Litter Down the Toilet in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the benefits of Beth Anne\u2019s Finest All Natural Cat Litter is that it can be disposed of in a variety of ways without harming the environment.\u00a0 Our cat litter can be sprinkled outdoors or placed into a landfill where it will breakdown naturally.\u00a0 And, if you choose to dispose of used cat litter by immersing it in water, it will transform to the consistency of pancake batter so it can be flushed away without harming pipes or clogging septic tanks.<\/p>\n<p>California is the only state which prohibits the flushing of used cat litter due to the fragile marine wildlife along the coast of California.\u00a0 Probably the most famous of the coastal habitat is the Southern Sea Otter (<em>Enhydra lutris nereis<\/em>).\u00a0 They once ranged from Baja California to the Pacific Northwest but by the 1920\u2019s they were almost extinct due to over hunting.\u00a0 Sea otters were listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act in 1977.\u00a0 While great efforts are being made to recover their population, the southern sea otters rate of increase has been limited by the availability of food.\u00a0 And there remains the threat of a major oil spill.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-296 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bethannesfinestallnatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sea-otter-iStock_000028078122_Medium-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Sea Otter\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bethannesfinestallnatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sea-otter-iStock_000028078122_Medium-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bethannesfinestallnatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sea-otter-iStock_000028078122_Medium-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bethannesfinestallnatural.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/sea-otter-iStock_000028078122_Medium.jpg 817w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In 1911, when sea otters gained protection under the North Pacific Fur Seal Treaty, a very small group of approximately 50 otters survived along the remote Big Sur Coast.\u00a0 Since then, they\u2019ve slowly expanded in number to nearly 3000.\u00a0 Their range extends from south of Half Moon Bay in the north to south of Point Conception in the south, only a fraction of their historic range.<\/p>\n<p>The harm which can be caused by used cat litter is the possible presence of a parasite named <em>toxoplasmosis<\/em> in cat fecal matter.\u00a0 There is evidence that <em>toxoplasmosis<\/em> has infected marine mammals and sea otters.\u00a0<em> Toxoplasmosis<\/em> cannot be destroyed by sewage treatment.\u00a0 It discharges into waterways, where crabs and starfish feed on it, thus endangering the lives of other marine mammals who feed on the crabs and starfish.\u00a0 <em>Toxoplasmosis<\/em> can cause brain damage and death in sea otters.<\/p>\n<p>The Monterey Bay Aquarium Sea Otter Program has been on the forefront of research on southern sea otters since 1984.\u00a0 Their mission is to understand threats to the population and promoting its recovery.\u00a0 They also rescue, treat and release injured otters;
